'All bets are off' at quarterback

The element of surprise didn't work. Now Charlie Weis will take a stab at stability.

When Notre Dame heads to Penn State this weekend attempting to rebound from the worst opening loss in school history, the Irish will do it with a known quantity at quarterback. Weis said he's not sure which of his three quarterbacks will start against the Nittany Lions, but the Irish coach won't keep his identity secret.

"My vow of secrecy? At this stage right now I think the team needs a stable," Weis said. "When you lose 33-3, I think that right now we need to rally the troops. Circle the wagons. All those other phrases that you've used in different sports, well it's time for us to do them."

Weis said he'll announce his starter on Tuesday. The only certainty is that Demetrius Jones, Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen are all under consideration.

"It at least starts with the foundation," Weis said. "That's a good place for me to start."
