Maiava, Miller impressive in their debut

BOULDER, Colo. - Their recruiting processes out of high school couldn't have been much different.

Ryan Miller was a five-star prospect with scholarship offers from nearly every Division-1 program in the country. While Kai Maiava had to wait until the eve of signing day to find out whether or not he would have an opportunity to sign with the Buffaloes. He received a late offer from Colorado when Garth Gerhart changed his pledge to Arizona State.

Both made their college debut last Saturday against Miami (Ohio). Maiava entered the game with 1:18 remaining in the first quarter when Devin Head suffered a neck stinger. The 6-foot-8 Miller subbed in for Edwin Harrison, who also went down with a minor injury with 13:05 left in the second quarter. Head and Harrison both returned, but Maiava and Miller continued to rotate in for the remainder of the game.

"[They] did a nice job," head coach Dan Hawkins said on Tuesday. "Kai played really, really hard. And so did Ryan. [We were] very pleased with both those guys. I think it was great for them to get in there and get their feet wet and kind of get a taste of action. I think that helps them as they practice, too, because they understand a little bit the pace of a game and what it takes to be successful out there."
