Notebook: Record weighing on Groves

Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves entered his senior season needing only three sacks to tie the school record.

He got two in the season-opener against Kansas State.

The following week against South Florida, Groves dropped Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe for an 11-yard loss in the third quarter.

He had tied Gerald Robinson's 22-year-old record.

One problem: Yellow hanky on the field.

Groves' sack was nullified when teammate Josh Thompson was called for a face-mask penalty.

He still needed one to tie.

Groves didn't collect a sack against South Florida, nor Mississippi State. Not even New Mexico State. Three weeks after getting one short of the record, 195 minutes of football later, Groves is still waiting.
