Notes on a scorebard: USC escapes Washington

USC had been on the wrong end of too many penalties, too many turnovers, too many bungled plays. Nothing seemed to be bouncing right for the nation's No. 1 team, so Terrell Thomas forced the issue.

This one set up USC's final score, ultimately a 33-yard David Buehler field goal, which provided the difference in a 27-24 victory.

"I was just coming down, kind of snuck in behind the defender, hit (Russo), got a good grip on the ball, pulled it out and made a play," Thomas said. "It happens that way sometimes."
