In great tragedy, Matt Spanos said, opportunity exists.
Referring to football injuries as great tragedies might be a stretch. But Spanos has become an expert on the give and take.
Four and a half weeks earlier, Spanos tore his right triceps. Coaches believed that if he were to return during his final season at USC, it could not be at center, where he had won a starting job. The injury, they believed, would strip him of his snapping abilities.
So, in came true freshman Kristofer O'Dowd. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Arizona native quickly gained a reputation as a forceful blocker, taking advantage of the opportunity caused by Spanos' injury.
