Scouting the Aggies
While it's usually known as the Red River
Shootout Rivalry, the game between Oklahoma and Texas should be call the Red River Undercard this weekend.
It's quite fitting that the Sooners and Longhorns play before Oklahoma State and Texas A&M this weekend, as the first game will be a desperation contest to avoid an 0-2 Big 12 start, while the nightcap is a battle for early control in the rough-and-tumble South Division. Both the Cowboys and Aggies enter this game at 1-0 in the conference and by the end of Saturday night, either the Pokes or the Gig 'Em's will have a two-game lead over OU or UT. In a division which has been dominated by those teams, that's a huge deal.
Besides being a battle for first place in the Big 12 South, it's also a game which features two interesting coaching storylines. In the past two weeks, Mike Gundy and Dennis Franchione have made national headlines. Gundy's media tirade turned him into the most popular person in the sporting world last week. This week, Franchione's e-mailgate has dialed up his hot seat to 11 and made him look bad in the process.
So it's safe to say there's a lot on the line in this game. Then throw in last year's zany 34-33 overtime finish that A&M won over OSU last year in Stillwater and you have all the makings for an interesting contest.
