Evans steps up his play just in time

For Auburn, no position has been hit harder by injuries and attrition this year than linebacker.

It started in the summer when grades forced projected starter Patrick Trahan to junior college. Key backup Steve Gandy had to give up football after suffering a concussion in preseason drills.

Auburn began the season with a projected starting lineup of Merrill Johnson, Tray Blackmon and Craig Stevens. But Johnson and Blackmon have managed to play in just two of the Tigers first six games.

Luckily for AU, they have a veteran like Chris Evans who's stepped up his play just when he was needed the most.

The junior has played nearly every snap of the season, filling in at both middle and weakside linebacker. Evans currently leads the team in tackles and is coming off one of his best game of the season against Vanderbilt, earning Defensive Player of the Week honors from the AU staff.
