Spurrier: Mitchell's return to field possible

South Carolina fans could see a familiar face under center Saturday when the sixth-ranked Gamecocks face Vanderbilt at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Blake Mitchell, benched since the start of the second half of the LSU game four weeks ago, could take some snaps against the Commodores, USC head coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday during his weekly press conference at Williams-Brice Stadium.

"We may let Blake go play some this week," Spurrier said.

While Spurrier emphasized redshirt freshman Chris Smelley will remain the starter, Mitchell, a fifth-year senior, has earned another opportunity with a series of excellent practices.

"He's been pretty good," Spurrier said. "He practiced well (Monday) night, and maybe because he practiced so well, we as a coaching staff said, 'Hey, he needs to play some. He deserves to play some also.' There's not a huge difference between he and Chris.
