Insider: Battle at left tackle; tailback updates

If it had to happen, Butch Lewis' freak accident came at right time. Running down the stairs in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, he did not see his sneakers - a few steps from the bottom - until it was too late. He leaped over the footwear and landed awkwardly at the bottom of the staircase.

He sprained an ankle; sat out a couple of weeks; studied All-American Sam Baker at left tackle; and returned once the healing process was well underway.

If it had to happen, Charles Brown's practice accident came at wrong time. A teammate rolled up on his ankle, and he suffered a severe high ankle sprain.

Several days later, Baker only made it through the first quarter of USC's Oct. 13 game against Arizona. The senior left clutching his hamstring.

Baker's backup, Brown, had a fresh injury and could not play. Lewis entered instead.

"Crazy how it all happened," the redshirt freshman Lewis said.
