Renfree wins title; re-opens recruitment

Sean Renfree threw for 411 yards and five touchdown passes in Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep's 49-32 victory over Cottonwood Mingus in the Class 4A Division II Championship at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Friday night. A day later, Renfree announced that he was officially re-opening the recruiting process.

"I'm de-committing," Renfree said on Saturday. "I just didn't do it during the season because I wanted to focus on my team without having the distractions and coaches calling and everything. The new Georgia Tech coach (Paul Johnson, hired Friday from Navy), from what it sounds like is going to bring in his option-based offense and obviously I'm not a very good fit for that."

The 6-foot-3, 205 pound signal caller committed to Georgia Tech in July over offers from numerous schools, with Arizona State, Oregon State and Boise State among his final four. He has already had discussions with those three schools' coaches, as well as Tennessee.

"Once it goes public I'm just going to sit back and wait to see what colleges are going to be interested in me," Renfree said. "The schools that I've talked to them since the start of my recruitment will have a small advantage. I know all of the guys with Arizona State well and Oregon State. They've been real nice to me. They will have a slight edge but that won't be a major factor in where I want to go.

"Right now I'm going to enjoy this win and take it all in and use the next week as an evaluation process."

Renfree, who threw for 3,198 yards and 39 touchdowns against just five interceptions on the season for his 13-1, said that he will not make any quick decisions about which schools will earn his remaining official visits.

"The dead date is a week away so I want to talk to all these coaches as much as possible," he said. "I don't think I'll be taking any officials in the month of December because we have our banquet next weekend and then I'll be with my grandparents over the Christmas break. So I'll start setting them up in January. I'll narrow where I want to go for official visits and I want to take all of them."
