Renfree still unsure

A recent published report in the Arizona Republic suggesting Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep quarterback Sean Renfree has already determined where he will play in college is inaccurate, Renfree informed ASUDevils.com on Sunday.

"I have not made up my mind yet," Renfree said. "I did tell [The Republic] that I wanted to make my decision by Monday but I still don't know what it will be.

"I just know that I want to decide soon because whether it's today or a year from today it's still going to be the same. I could wait until Signing Day (Feb. 6) but there won't be anything new to help me make up my mind between now and then."

Renfree, The Arizona Republic's Big School Player of the Year and No. 15 ranked pro-style quarterback in the country by Rivals.com, did acknowledge that he has essentially trimmed his list to just Arizona State and Duke, with Boise State now less of a possibility.

"I really like Boise State too, but I just feel like ASU and Duke are both better all-around fits for me," Renfree said.

When asked whether he favored one of the finalists over the other, Renfree said no.

"I still see them about equal," he said. "I've been blessed to have some excellent options and it's a difficult decision. I know that the coaches might be a little bit frustrated with me but they haven't said anything to make me feel that way. Coach (Dennis) Erickson has been great about it and Duke has also been great.

"I just want to make a decision and be 100 percent about it because I don't think anything is going to change. You just have to make the decision you think is best and that's what I'm trying to do."

The 6-foot-3, 205 pound signal caller said that having an opportunity to compete for playing time early, and getting practice repetitions are important factors.

"I'd like to be able to play in the NFL in the future if it's possible but in order to do that you have to improve in college and get the opportunity to see the field," Renfree said. "I feel confident I will be able to do that wherever I go but I still want to pick the school that is the best fit."

Renfree, who threw for 3,198 yards and 39 touchdowns against just five interceptions on the season said that ASU and Duke both have advantages over the other.

At Duke, there are only three quarterbacks he would be competing against, but the starter and top backup are both sophomores. At ASU, there would be as many as five quarterbacks on the roster, but once senior-to-be Rudy Carpenter graduates, the starting job would be vacant.

"I think my mom would like me to stay close to home, Renfree admitted. "But my parents are trying to stay out of it because they want me to be able to make my own decision. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, but I do know I want up my mind pretty quickly and stick with it. Like I said: I feel blessed to have such really good options."
