Local junior QB talks early recruiting

Tate Forcier has established himself as the top quarterback prospect in the San Diego for 2009. The Scripps Ranch gunslinger has already racked up 17 scholarship offers.

Forcier is not the only quarterback in the area to keep an eye on this recruiting cycle.

Colton Morrison, from El Camino High School in Oceanside, has been drawing interest from a long list of colleges early on.

Morrison, who stands 6-foot-6, threw for 444 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception last fall. He played in just four games due to injury (torn hip flexor and concussion).

Morrison has a very strong arm. He can throw the ball up to 75 yards. This off-season, he is focused on improving his athleticism.

Cal, Notre Dame, Virginia, Connecticut, Michigan State, San Diego State, Purdue, Louisville, Northwestern, Washington, NC State and Duke are among the colleges that have been flooding his mailbox.

"San Diego State, Purdue, Tennessee, Louisville and Arizona State are my top schools right now," Morrison stated. "San Diego State and Purdue have both hinted [that they might extend an early scholarship offer]."

What are his impressions of the Aztecs and Boiler Makers?

"I like San Diego State a lot because it is really close to home," Morrison expressed. "My family could come to all of my home games if I went there. They said if I went there they'd like to redshirt me as a freshman so I could have three years to start there. With Purdue, I love their offense. Coach Z (Ed Zaunbrecher) came down to our school and I really like him."

Morrison plans to camp at Tennessee and Oregon State this summer. "I am also planning to attend both of San Diego State's camps because they are really high on me right now," he added. "They want to start developing me. So I am going to try to make it to both of their camps."

Academically, Morrison maintains a 3.2 GPA. He plans to study Business in college.
