Spartans sixth commitment, Blake Treadwell

One of the top football players last fall in the Capital Area was a transfer named Blake Treadwell of East Lansing High School. Treadwell made the switch to the Trojans when his dad, Don, came back to Michigan State University to be the offensive coordinator for Coach Mark Dantonio. Treadwell had previously worked at Michigan State under Bobby Williams.

This past weekend Treadwell gave his father and Coach Dantonio a pleasant surprise when he committed to Michigan State University. SpartanMag.com has some additional information.

The 6-foot-2.5 270-pound Treadwell is a physical player with a good motor. Last year he was a key member of East Lansing's team that made a run deep into the playoffs. Treadwell played an important role in paving the way for running back Isaac Harper to put up record-setting numbers for the Trojans. Treadwell will likely play an interior offensive line prospect like center for the Spartans.

After the 2007 season, Treadwell received numerous accolades for his play. He was named All-League, Lansing State Journal Dream Team and All-State Special Mention. One of the interesting aspects of his list of honors is that many of Treadwell's accolades came for his play on the defensive line, not just the offensive line.

SpartanMag.com is the only recruiting publication that had Treadwell ranked as one of the top 25 prospects in Michigan for the class of 2009. We watched him play last year when evaluating film of Harper. It was obvious that he was one of the best kept secrets in Michigan.

Despite his dad coaching at Michigan State, the staff apparently treated Treadwell like any other prospect and thoroughly evaluated him. Coach Treadwell is the offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach for the Spartans, he has little input on which lineman end up getting offered. The decision on which linemen get offered is made ultimately by Coach Dantonio and the position coaches.

The Spartan position coaches were able to scout Blake at his high school games last fall as well as at camp last summer. Treadwell's continued development and growth over the past year is what garnered the early Spartan scholarship offer.

Usually SpartanMag.com speaks with new verbal commitments to get quotes about what it was about Michigan State University and the football program that brought them to decide to join the Spartan family. We spoke with the Treadwell family earlier today and they indicated that they would prefer to not talk to the media about recruiting.

SpartanMag.com always respects the recruits and their parents when to their wishes. Obviously other sources will likely try and contact Treadwell to get quotes, but we will not.

SpartanMag.com was able to obtain Treadwell's highlight film when he attended the Rivals.com Five-Star Academy this past weekend. We hope to have that video uploaded in the near future. That film will help Rivals.com determine where Treadwell will be nationally ranked.
