Tigers lead for big-play receiver

A star for AISA state champion Bessemer (Ala.) Academy, wide receiver Brandon Heavens put up some huge numbers as a junior.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Heavens caught 41 passes for 1,236 yards and 11 touchdowns, and rushed for 730 yards and seven touchdowns on 43 carries. He also returned 12 kickoffs for 585 yards and three touchdowns, and 15 punts for 568 yards and two touchdowns.

All told, Heavens accounted for 3,119 yards all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns.

"I've got pretty good speed and I can get in the open field and make people miss," said Heavens.

Heavens, who said he runs a 4.43 40-yard dash, has picked up early offers from Auburn, Mississippi State and Kentucky.

"Right now, my favorite is Auburn," said Heavens. "I like the whole atmosphere there and their new spread offense. We run the same offense in high school."

Heavens got a close-up look at AU's offense this spring when he visited for a Junior Day.
