Sam puts Iowa State at no. 1

The season is winding down at Hitchcock High School in Texas and senior outside linebacker Michael Sam is starting to get more serious about his recruitment. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound Sam took his first official visit of the process this weekend to Iowa State and talked about his impressions of the trip.

"It went real well and I enjoyed myself," Sam commented. "I talked to Coach (Gene) Chizik and I know he's a winner and I know he's going to get the job done. He's building for the future and I could see myself there."

After meeting with Iowa State coaches and watching a game in person, Sam feels that not only can he bring additional leadership, but he can also bring the ability to step in and contribute immediately.

"I saw my opportunity if I go to maybe play as a true freshman," Sam said. "The depth chart, there are so many seniors leaving and they play a lot of freshmen."

Besides Iowa State, Sam has garnered scholarship offers from the likes of Houston, Arizona State and Colorado State. The Cyclones had the benefit of being the first school he officially visited and because they took advantage of that opportunity, they currently hold the lead in the race for his signature.
