Sam puts CSU on top

While it isn't the sort of coaching change that gets a lot of ink, a change in the coaching staff at Iowa State has Hitchcock (Tex.) linebacker Michael Sam re-working his top three college choices. In November, Sam was quoted as saying Iowa State was his number one choice. That was before Cyclone coach Gene Chizik reworked his staff releasing two assistant coaches - Tony Peterson and Shawn Raney.

Sam is a 6'3", 230-pound linebacker with offers from Iowa State, Colorado State, Houston and Arizona State. Currently, he says the Rams have the upper hand since the changeover in Ames.

"I put Colorado State above Iowa State for several different reasons," Sam said. "Coach Chizik changed their staff and some of the guys I was talking to up there got replaced. I am having second thoughts.

"I do have a number one choice right now and that is Colorado State," Sam said.

Sam has set an official visit date for January, moving it from his original plan of Dec. 19 as Colorado State plans to be well into their bowl preparations. CSU defensive line coach Scott Brown has been in constant contact with Sam and and was in Texas to see Sam on Tuesday. Brown had hoped Sam could make it to Colorado this weekend, but instead Sam will be taking the SAT.

"Ever since the off-season we've (Brown and Sam) been talking and he is a good guy," Sam said. "I may be playing for them soon. I don't know. I have some options and I want to go check them out. Soon, I will narrow it down. Coach Brown was saying he likes me and wants me up there real bad," Sam said. "I'll go visit and see how I like it. Colorado State is one of my top choices next to Arizona State, Iowa State, TCU and Houston."

In addition to his visit to Colorado State, Sam has a trip planned to Arizona State and will likely visit Texas Christian as well. The coaching staff from the Frogs visited Sam this week and wants to see more video on him.

"TCU game by today and told me they really like me and they have only like one or two highlight films and they were last year," Sam said. "They do their evaluations mostly on video, so they got some game films. If they offer me, that would be up there too. My dad would probably be pressuring me to go there."

Sam explained his father spends a lot of time in Dallas on work and has an apartment in the Metroplex.
