U-M offer would be hard to pass on for Easterly

Detroit athlete Daniel Easterly attended Michigan's Junior Day Friday hoping he would be an extended an official scholarship offer. Easterly didn't walk away with one, but he received some good news and might return the favor …

"They didn't offer but Coach [Tony] Dews, Coach [Bruce] Tall and Coach [Rich] Rodriguez all said it's right around the corner and I should have an offer in a few weeks," said Easterly, 6-4, 178 pounds.

"One of my deciding factors is how I fit in and because my teammates [from Cass Tech] - Will Campbell, Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon - are already up there it'd be perfect for me.

"But I'm not sure when I'll decide. I might want to commit soon or I might want to wait. I just don't know."

Easterly already holds offers from Illinois, Minnesota and Toledo, and was clear that he's not saying he will be a Wolverine, only that he likes a lot about the opportunity.

"I'm interested in any school that is interested in me and there are some other schools out there besides Michigan that I'm talking to," he said. "I like Michigan, though, because it'd be exciting to go to the same school as a lot of my friends. But I have to think about a lot of things before I make a decision."

Cass Tech cornerback teammate Dior Mathis also attended Junior Day and the two spent much of Friday together, grouped with the defensive backs. The Wolverines envision Easterly as a cornerback or safety.

"I have no preference but they like me on the defensive side of the ball," he said. "I just want to play the position that the coaches need me to play."

Easterly left Ann Arbor excited, and eagerly anticipating a letter from U-M. When the scholarship offer arrives, it might be hard to say no to.

"I could see me and Dior there with all the other guys," he said. "I know he likes Michigan too but I can't speak for him. I had a really good weekend but we'll see - I've got a lot of great schools that have shown me interest and I want to make sure I make the best decision for me, when I'm ready."
