Notebook: AU building depth at CB

Auburn ran into some serious depth problems at cornerback last year after Aairon Savage was lost for the season during fall camp and both Walter McFadden and Jerraud Powers playing through multiple injuries last season.

The Tigers had to rely on a trio of true freshmen in some key spots including Neiko Thorpe, D'Antoine Hood and Harry Adams.

"We had to throw those young guys in," AU cornerbacks coach Phillip Lolley said. "We had some good reps out of Neiko Thorpe, Hood had to play some and even Harry Adams had to come out and give us some reps. So, at least those guys have been in some ballgames."

That experience counts a lot because even with Powers declaring early for the NFL, Lolley said he is much more confident in the depth at corner than a year ago.

"We've run into some situations where depth has been a problem, and I don't want that to happen. So I'm just trying to build on things a little bit and hopefully I've got four, five six guys that can go in," Lolley said.

"Teams get weaker down the stretch. I'm trying to plan for a whole year depth-wise right now."

A big addition to the cornerback depth has been freshman T'Sharvan Bell, who redshirted last fall due to a foot injury. Bell has been a standout the first half of spring, moving up to the second-team behind McFadden and Thorpe.
