Meeting Andrew Abbott

Bruin walk-on redshirt freshman cornerback Andrew Abbott made his presence known this spring. He made plays and for a lot of fans was the talk of the spring. Most everybody loves a good Rocky Balboa story and Abbott went from walk-on to contender for some playing time this fall. had a few moments at the end of spring practice to talk to the feel good story of the spring. Andrew, you had a solid spring and appear to be one of the great finds. You are a walk-on running with the twos. You are a great story and an inspiration for many. Why did you decide to walk-on at UCLA?

Abbott: "I think it was the opportunity. I was going to walk-on at Oregon or here at UCLA and I just thought with the roster , the guys coming in and Coach Rick Neuheisel where can I fit in the best. Where would I have an opportunity of playing and getting a good education.

"I love California and like being close to home, not too far down the freeway, so UCLA was the perfect fit and once I got in, I was I know I'm here and there was no question about it." You played at a pretty good program Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei that gets a lot of attention. How do you think you were passed up? You're making a pretty good impact at UCLA.

Abbott: "I really don't know. I try not to think about it. I just use as fire inside of me. When I come out here every day I think about that, but I don't know how I was passed up. Maybe it might have been my height, who knows, but I really don't why I was passed up. I think it was unfortunate and I just thank Coach Neuheisel for giving me a chance because that's all I asked for and he gave it to me, but as far as why I was passed up, I really couldn't say. Things happen for a reason."
