Buddy Quarles Speaks Out
The uncertainty regarding Greenwood (SC) standout Kelcy Quarles' commitment to South Carolina appears to be over, as the four-star defensive tackle has shut down his recruiting.
Former Gamecock offensive lineman Buddy Quarles, the father of the highly-rated defender, told GamecockCentral.com that the process is finished.
"We're done now," he said. "I've been taking Kelcy down there (Columbia) since he was eight years old and he fell in love with the place."
Carrying on the family legacy was a big part of the decision.
"I told him it was a good college and a great place to play," the elder Quarles told GamecockCentral.com. "Other than that he wanted to go down there because I played there and continue the tradition.
The endless barrage of questions about Kelcy's commitment was beginning to wear on Mr. Quarles and on his son.
"I was getting tired of the phone calls from recruiters," he said. "The internet and the paper were saying he was going to decommit, Tennessee was on him and all of that. It was just getting ridiculous so we got it out of the way."
According to his father, Quarles is now all Gamecock.
"I told him you have to show your loyalty," he said. "The way we are going to do that is to take a summer class so he can graduate early and go to Carolina."
Quarles is rated the 35th-best player in the nation and the #1 defensive tackle prospect in the country. He committed to South Carolina in November of 2008 and was recruited to South Carolina by defensive line coach Brad Lawing.
