Alabama athlete camping at State

Pelham, Ala., athlete Ryan Williams is looking to showcase his skills this summer.

The 5-foot-7, 166-pound burner who ran a 4.42 at the Nike Combine in Mobile is hoping to land his first scholarship offer in the next few weeks after visiting numerous camps. One of the stops Williams will make will be Mississippi State where he is good friends with one of the Bulldogs receivers.

"Charles Bailey, one of the receivers over there, me and him are good friends," Williams said. "He talked to Coach (Mark) Hudspeth and got them looking at me. They said they really like me on tape and graded me out and had a high grading but they are still recruiting. They said they want to see me in camp. I am going to camp at Mississippi State but I am not sure exactly on the date but I think it's next week."

It will be the first time Williams has visited the Starkville campus but has heard some good things from Bailey about the new direction of the program on offense.

"This will be my first visit over there," Williams said. "I was supposed to come over earlier but it didn't work out because I had a prom to go to. Everything I have heard about it has come from Charles because he plays. He said that he likes it there. I know that they have a new offense and that's what I really like. They are running the spread now and I like that more than their two backs and just run the ball."

Williams plays a variety of roles for Pelham lining up at running back, slot receiver, cornerback and also returning kickoffs and punts. Last season he accumulated over 1,500 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns. He rushed 87 times for 667 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 47 passes for 433 yards. Williams also returned an interception 99-yards for a touchdown and brought a kickoff 89-yards in for a score leading the Panthers to a 6-5 record and a birth in the Class 6A State Playoffs.
