Bits and pieces from Camp

The Bruins held on Sunday the first day of their three-day football camp. The coaches were doing a fine job coaching kids up and making sure the kids were having fun. There was also an unexpected guest at the camp, who brought with two of his underclass teammates. This is a school that has done a nice job sending its best players to the D-I level, but nary a one to UCLA. It is not even clear they have ever sent a player to Bruin camp in years, until yesterday.

The guest of honor was five-star strong side defensive end Ronald Powell (6-4, 240, 4.8) from Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde. He came with class of 2011 standouts, quarterback Travis Champion (6-2, 200, 4.9) and wide receiver Junior Pomee (6-3, 190, 4.6).

It would be very tempting to play Powell at tight end, the position he was lining up at during the camp. He is so athletic and quick, he would be a matchup problem for many defenses at that position. Whoever lands Powell will have a pleasant dilemma of sorting out where will line up.
