Countdown to kickoff: #38 Jonathan Phillips

#38 Player/Hometown/High School: Jonathan Phillips Wellington (Fla.)

Hgt/Wgt: 5-foot-10, 210-lb Position: Place kicker Year: SR
Fall Depth Chart Projection: 1st string kicker

Spring Review: Right before the start of spring ball the Gators received a surprise when it was announced that Phillips was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. If going by their battle over the spring, neither Phillips or Caleb Sturgis asserted themselves as the starting kicker. There were times when they were hot, hitting several attempts in a row, but then there times when they missed multiple attempts. It did appear as though Phillips has increased his range somewhat and could now at least be given a chance to attempt a field goal in the 50 yard range if the situation dictates that.

Fall Projection:
Based on what he accomplished last year and the fact that he is coming back for yet another season, it is likely safe to say that he has nailed down the starting job over Sturgis regardless of what happens this fall during practice (unless of course, Phillips falls flat on his face). The question might come down to whether or not he handles kickoffs as well as the place kicking? If Phillips is good to go this year, does Sturgis waste yet another year as his backup?

Others who wore the number: Joey Sorrentino (2006-08), Chris Hetland (2002-06), Stephen English (2003), Matt Sitter (2001), Teddy Sims (1996-99), Tommy Shannon (1995), Chris Bilkie (1990-94), Cedric Smith (1986-89), Wayne Williams (1985), Joe Henderson (1982-84), Larry Slaughter (1981), Carl Prioleau (1979-1980), Joe Voor (1978), Larry Brinson (1974-76) and Nat Moore (1972)
