Mullen expects to win now

Everywhere Dan Mullen has gone throughout his career he has found a way to win.

The first-year head coach hopes to bring his successful ways to a program starving for success. Mullen is coming off his second national championship as offensive coordinator at Florida and brings his competitive energy and spirit to Mississippi State not to just win in the future but to win now.

"I've never liked to do the opposite of winning," Mullen said. "I have a need to win. I have a need to win at practice every single day. I think our coaches are very much the same way. I've never worried about anything but that. We get out there at practice and we game plan to find a way to win the game. Our defense has to find a way to give up one less point than we score. Our offensive guys have to figure out a way to score more than one more than we give up. Our need to win is immediate in me. We need to win now. That's why we are here."

Mullen spoke at length about winning during the Bulldogs Media Day on Friday afternoon. Many preseason prognosticators have picked MSU to again be the doormat of the Southeastern Conference but Mullen was quick to point out that none of those voters get a behind the scenes look at the everyday activities surrounding his team.

He hopes that his players will take the preseason predictions and use them as motivation for the upcoming year.

"I don't mind our guys having a little chip on their shoulders," Mullen said. "Most people I think picked us to finish last in the league. That's great. I've been picked to finish last before and finished first. I've been picked to finish first before and then didn't do so well. The rankings that matter for us are going to be at the beginning of the year."

Since he took the job on Dec. 10, 2008, Mullen has made it a personal mission to instill winning ways into the players. Most of the drills in practice and even workouts have been a competition for the players.
