Big RB picks Iowa

In early August, Maryland running back Marcus Coker took a road trip to the Midwest making stops on the campuses at Iowa and Minnesota as he looked to narrow down his college choices. After thinking things over for the past couple of weeks, the 6-foot-1, 222-pound Coker decided that he had found a home in Iowa City.

Coker chose the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Minnesota, Wake Forest, Maryland, and Kansas State, among others. A big, bruising running back who rushed for 1,174 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior last season, the three-star prospect says he should be a good match for Iowa's offense.

Now, with his decision out of the way, Coker turns his full attention to the upcoming season as DeMatha Catholic High School looks to build upon their 9-2 record from last year. The Stags officially kick off the season on September 5 against Riverdale Baptist.

Coker is the eleventh verbal commitment for Iowa in the Class of 2010 and the third from the state of Maryland, joining Jim Poggi and Anthony Ferguson from Baltimore. The three future Hawkeyes will actually be on the same field in a couple of weeks as DeMatha faces Gilman on September 12.
