Position Preview: Cornerbacks

One of the big question marks heading into the season is how will Mississippi State address their inexperience at cornerback.

The Bulldogs return only one upperclassmen returning in Marcus Washington leaving the rest of the unit unproven for the most part. But corners coach Melvin Smith said that the group is ready to go when the Bulldogs kickoff the season Saturday.

"They just need to play somebody else," Smith said. "You never know what you've got until you play somebody else. They have done about as much as they can do against us. If I had to rank them right now as far as knowing what to do I would go Marcus, D.A. (Damien Anderson, Louis Watson , Corey Broomfield, Johnthan Banksand Marvin Bure. But I am probably going to play all of them at different times, all six of them. We need them all."

Washington obviously has the most experience playing in 36 games drawing 19 starts. Anderson is the only other cornerback with any game experience playing in 11 games as a redshirt freshman last season.

"Five of them are young guys," Smith said. "I've got to help them with what I know and Marcus has done a good job. If we can hold on early then we are probably going to be pretty good later on."

Smith has been pleased the condition the corners reported to fall camp in after spending the summer with new strength coach Matt Balis and his staff.
