Gerhart gets into the running for Heisman

North Carolina cornerback Kendric Burney intercepted three passes and returned one for a touchdown in a 33-24 upset of Miami. His 170 yards on interception returns set an ACC record.
Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead ran for 175 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in a 24-21 win over West Virginia.
Ohio State running back Brandon Saine rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries in a 27-24 overtime victory over Iowa.
BIG 12
Missouri wide receiver Danario Alexander caught 10 passes for 200 yards and three scores in a 38-12 rout of Kansas State.
CONFERENCE USA: UCF running back Brynn Harvey rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries as the Knights upset Houston 37-32.
Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour was 29-of-36 for 341 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for four touchdowns in a 56-28 win over Toledo.
TCU freshman running back Ed Wesley rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in the 55-28 romp past Utah.
Ole Miss running back Dexter McCluster rushed for 282 yards and four scores on 25 carries in a 42-17 rout of Tennessee. He also had 42 receiving yards.
Middle Tennessee quarterback Dwight Dasher was 16-of-25 for 219 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-17 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. He also rushed for 89 yards.
Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis caught eight passes for 123 yards and four touchdowns and completed a two-point conversion pass as the Broncos pounded Idaho 63-25.
Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate caught nine passes for 113 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt for a touchdown in a 27-22 loss at Pittsburgh.

Stanford running back Toby Gerhart entered 2009 on the heels of a 1,100-yard, 15-touchdown season, but he received scant preseason attention in the Pac-10.

Most of the attention was focused on California's Jahvid Best and Oregon State's Jacquizz Rodgers. USC's Joe McKnight was considered a breakout candidate. And people wondered what LeGarrette Blount could do as Oregon's feature back.

So much for predictions.

Gerhart rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries in Saturday's 55-21 demolition of USC to earn Rivals.com National Player of the Week honors.

The standout performance gives Gerhart 401 yards and six touchdowns against top-10 opponents in the past two weeks. It also puts him in the top three nationally in rushing and probably on some Heisman ballots.

Stanford's 55 points were the most scored on USC in the Trojans' history.

"To do that against a storied program, a perennial power, it's the greatest feeling in the world," Gerhart said. "It was just will. The offensive line just moved people. We got after them and got downhill, and it was just a good offensive day."

QB E.J. Manuel, Florida State

Manuel, a redshirt freshman, was 15-of-20 passing for 220 yards and a touchdown in his first career start, a 41-28 victory at Wake Forest. Manuel also rushed for 45 yards and a score in the win, which evened Florida State's record at 5-5 as the Seminoles make a push for their 28th straight bowl.

Jarrett Anderson and Justin Fuente, TCU

In recent years, TCU's offense has been overshadowed by a fantastic defense. That's not so this season. Anderson and Fuente, first-year co-coordinators, led TCU's offense to a dominating performance of Utah, a top-20 team in total defense going into Saturday. The Horned Frogs rushed for 342 yards and passed for 207 in the 55-28 victory over the Utes, which kept TCU undefeated.
