Big Plays Take Longview Back to Brink of Title

DALLAS- Lose your star running back early in the second quarter in a close ball game?? No problem for the Longview Lobos (14-1) as they rolled up an impressive 485 yards on the ground in a 49-28 win over the Denton Guyer Wildcats (13-2) at Kincaide Stadium.

The win gives Longview a rematch with Lake Travis who won the Class 4A Division I State Title with a win over Longview in 2008. Guyer who had allowed just one 100 yard rusher all season allowed three from Longview on Saturday as the Lobos speed was simply too much for Guyer's defense to contain.

Longview opened up with big plays early as it appeared Tyler McCray had scored on an 81 yard run on the third play from scrimmage but an illegal block downfield negated the scored but still gave Longview the ball deep in Wildcats territory. Da'Cedric Hunt would score four plays later for the Lobos from two yards out making it 7-0.

Guyer responded quickly with J.W. Walsh hitting a 47 yard pass to Dylan Moore on Guyer's first offensive play. Cameron Hunter would score from nine yards out to tie things up at seven.

Longview's ground game got untracked early in the second quarter as on a busted draw play Aaron Johnson simply had too much speed and vision as he raced 52 yards weaving through the Guyer defense for the score and a 14-7 edge to the Lobos. Longview would add to the lead later in the quarter as Tyler McCray on his final carry of the night would show sensational vision cutting through a small hole and racing to the pylon for a 38 yard scoring run and a 21-7 edge for Longview. McCray would leave the game with an ankle injury at that point and note return as he rushed for 125 yards on just five carries.

Guyer would cut the lead to 21-14 as sophomore RB Sebastian Williams gave Wildcat fans a glimpse into the future scoring from nine yards out to cut the edge to 21-14. Longview would strike through the air as backup RB Hunt caught a 29 yard pass from Johnson scoring with just 23 seconds left in the half. Hunt caught the ball at the nine, made a nice move to the four and carried four Guyer defenders into the end zone in a trust display of will to get it in the end zone.

With Longview up 28-14 at the half, Guyer was quick to come out swinging to start the third quarter as Hunter returned the opening kickoff to near midfield. Jaimaine Wilhite scored from a yard out to again cut the Longview lead to seven at 28-21. Longview's next big play proved to be a back breaker as Hunt rattled off a 91 yard touchdown run to quell Guyer momentum and give the large Longview crowd a lot to cheer about as it was 35-21 LHS.

Johnson would add two more touchdown runs to close out the scoring for Longview, while Guyer managed a fourth quarter score as Wilhite caught an 18 yard touchdown pass from Walsh late for the final tally of 49-28.
