Jameel Owens was possibly transferring to Tulsa. ITS reported yesterday morning that it was close to a done deal, and that has been confirmed by a report out of Owens' hometown.Rumors have been brewing in Hurricane Alley on InsideTulsaSports.com since Friday that Oklahoma Sooners' wide receiver
"I've got to do what's right for me," Owens told the Muskogee Phoenix, which stated that Owens will "get a new start at the University of Tulsa."
"It wasn't working out like it should here for me, and with my mom having health issues too, this was the move I needed to make," Owens added.
The 6-foot-3 and 225-pounder was the No. 1 prospect in the state of Oklahoma coming out of high school in 2008. The 4-star recruit was rated as the No. 52 overall prospect nationally and the No. 8 wide receiver in the country.
Owens saw limited playing time as a freshman at OU and did not see the field as a sophomore. He was due to receive redshirt status due to no playing time.
Health issues related to his mother, Debra, will reportedly allow him to be eligible at TU next season through a hardship status.
Muskogee head coach Matt Hennesy apparently spoke to Tulsa assistant coach Bill Blankenship once Owens had made the decision. However, since he just obtained his release, he has not officially enrolled at TU.
"He's ecstatic," Hennesy said of Blankenship. "Being home, being closer to family, I think it will be a good move for Jameel."
"As long as I get to play, I'm going to be happy," Owens told the local paper.
