Heater: Getting off the field

While offensive play calling has been the hot topic of Gators football, some have said the defense let the team down in Saturday's 33-29 loss to LSU. Chuck Heater, co-defensive coordinator, talked with the media Wednesday evening about what needs to be improved and discussed some of the players in his unit.

On 3rd down defense:

"If you're going to have success, you have to get off the field on third down. That's always a key. If they get a first (down) on third down, that's a problem. The critical plays and situations - we've got to win those situations to be successful."

On Will Hill's disappointing production so far this season:

"He's had some missed tackles, that's the situation. You're always coaching against the backend because a missed tackle on the backend can become a problem in a hurry. He's not the only guy, but he's the guy we're trying to improve."

On the possibility of Josh Evans seeing more time on the field:

"That's not the plan right now."

On Matt Elam's status:

"He's getting close. He missed a few days this week, but he's getting closer."

On the defense's response to back-to-back losses:

"As a competitor, when you watch the tape and it's not what you want it to be, you go compete. You try to get better. You practice to get better. I know no other way of getting better than to practice, that's how you get better. If you could drink some magic potion and make it all work that would be great, but they just go out to practice and get better."

On Ahmad Black's high level of performance:

"He's been a great leader. He's been a great kid. We're all going to miss Ahmad Black some day. He's been sensational. He's played really well this year, I can't say enough about him. He's doing his part of playing championship football on a weekly basis."
