Warhawks trick Trojans for conference win

The Halloween day contest between ULM and Troy had lots of tricks and a sprinkle of treats for the 19,980 fans in Malone Stadium. In the end though; it was the home standing Warhawks that remained unbeaten at home with a 28-14 win.

"I've always believed in this team, I really always have," Head Coach Todd Berry said with Gatoraid still dripping from him. "I've been anxious for them to see what they can be when they play real well."

The Warhawks did play well as they out gained the visiting Trojans 428 to 285, but looked to be off to a rocky start as they fumbled the opening kick off, recovering, only to later turn the ball over on a Zach Rhodes fumble. Rhodes would leave the field injured and did not return.

Troy would capitalize on the turnover as redshirt freshman Corey Robinson hit Jamel Johnson for a 28 yard score. Robinson, who entered as the leading freshman passer nationally was held in check to just 167 yards and was intercepted twice.

The Warhawks would answer with a long score of their own to tie the score at seven as Kolton Browning connected with Tavarese Maye on a 48 yard score. Browning ran his streak of 200 plus yard passing performances to seven, as he ended the game with 226. The pass to Maye was the longest play for ULM this season, surpassing the 47 yard against Southeastern Louisiana that also involved Maye.

Both teams would trade scores as Browning would get his first of two touchdowns with a one yard TD, and the Trojans would answer with a 16 yard Jerrel Jernigan run. The Warhawks would take a 21-14 half time lead though with a 43 yard Maye round-end run for his second score of the game.

ULM would build on their lead in the second half with Browning's second score in the game, running in from nine yards out.
