Black Q&A: Gators remained confident

MORE GATOR FOOTBALL: McCray's big day | Meyer: Brantley still No. 1 | 5-star performance from Floyd

Senior leaders such as safety Ahmad Black have an important role as the Gators find themselves in a "championship week" preparing for a prime-time showdown with No. 22 South Carolina for the SEC East crown. On Monday, the safety with an opinion on everything discussed a familiar foe, a fellow Lakeland Gator, some of Saturday's match-ups and more.

On South Carolina junior quarterback Stephen Garcia:

"(He's) pretty good. Over the years he's gotten better. I've seen him as a freshman, as a sophomore and a junior. He's getting better every year. He's a great quarterback. He likes to stay mobile. He takes some of the blitzes and the pressure now. He used to just try to get the ball away, but now he sits back there and with everybody in his face still gets the ball thrown."

On the probable match-up of Gators corner Janoris Jenkins and Gamecocks receiver Alshon Jeffery, the SEC's leading receiver in receptions and receiving yards per game:

"It's going to be a great match-up. Both of them are great players. We tend to stick Janoris on the best receiver."

On longtime teammate Chris Rainey:

"He's a different guy. I like the way he's been attacking it and approaching the game since he's been back. I always say Chris is a great playmaker. I'm glad he's a Gator still."

On how the defense stopped Vanderbilt on third downs, a recent problem for the Gators:

"We talked about on third down we have to get off the field. We made it our job to stop them every time - whatever it took. We focused on it a little bit more (this week)."

On if the win helped the team regain its confidence:

"We didn't really lose it. We had to play better. We had to get better. We were practicing really hard and Coach was getting us out there grindin'. It's all paying off in the game."

On if he thought the team had a chance at playing for the SEC championship when the Gators lost three games in a row:

"Not back then, not at all. We always focus on playing one game at a time and taking everything one game at a time. We did that and everything has fallen into place for us."
