Successful surgery for UT commit Russell

San Antonio Sam Houston defensive tackle Quincy Russell has been working through a knee injury since mid-September. He was able to come back to finish the 2010 season and even worked with the basketball team. However, during Army All-American bowl practices, the knee was re-aggravated and on Friday he underwent another surgical procedure.

"It went well, I felt more comfortable than I did after my first surgery," Russell said. "They went in and removed some cartilage and repaired a tendon or something so it can grow back on its own the way it's supposed to."

While the knee is feeling better, Russell plans to take his time coming back as he works toward getting back to full speed.

"I'm not really going to rush myself back into basketball, but if I'm good enough to go back out there and play I'll get back out there," he said.

For now though, he is content to rehab and cheer on his teammates on the basketball team.

"I just got back to school today so I've been on crutches and couldn't walk," Russell said. "This was my first day back in about a week or so. I'm going to be at every game I can make it to."

On the recruiting front, Russell has had a number of schools trying to get in his ear lately, but the standout defensive tackle says he has told them he is going to stick with his commitment to Texas. The Longhorns visited Sam Houston High School on Tuesday to see Russell and his family, and Russell, who has yet to take any official visits, hopes to take his first this weekend to Texas.

"I plan to come up there this weekend, Friday night or Saturday morning," he said. "I plan to if everything works out."

Russell is currently ranked No. 125 in the Rivals250, No. 11 among defensive tackles, and has been committed to Texas since June 27.
