Updated: Lewis in stable condition after shooting

Arizona State running back Deantre Lewis was shot Saturday near his hometown of Riverside, Calif., while visiting family.

Multiple sources said Lewis was in stable condition in a local hospital after being shot in the buttocks while outside a family residence.

The shooting is believed to be random, one source said, and Lewis was the only person injured at the location.

An ASU spokesperson released the following statement Sunday afternoon:

"Deantre was at a family residence in Riverside, while there he was hit with a stray bullet from elsewhere in the neighborhood, taken to hospital where the bullet was removed. There is no muscle damage. He could be released from the hospital either today or tomorrow and could be back at school later this week."

ASU coach Dennis Erickson released the following statement:

"I have spoken to the family and they know they have the support of all Sun Devils everywhere. We are looking forward to a full recovery."

Last season as a true freshman, Lewis finished second on the team with 539 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 370 yards and two touchdowns.
