In-state QB shines at VTOSports Elite 100 camp

Nearby Central-Phenix City High School dual-threat quarterback Jonathan Wallace may have just one offer now, but he's working hard to ensure that more will follow.

Wallace was named Most Valuable Player of the quarterbacks Sunday at the VTO camp in Leeds, Ala. The camp featured approximately 150 athletes running drills and going through individual testing at the Leeds High School stadium.

The lone offer comes from Arkansas State, but Auburn, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech have been showing interest in the 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback.

"I have to put in work," Wallace said. "That's the only way I'll be able to get some offers in and see where I really fit in at."

Winning the MVP award may help him gain attention, but he's also improving his technique to ensure that he has a strong senior campaign this fall.

"Being a quarterback, everything has to be right," Wallace said. "You can't have a strong arm and bad footwork just like you can't have great footwork and a weak arm. Everything has to come together."

Throughout Sunday's camp, Wallace's athleticism helped him earn the top honor, but he wanted to make sure he' showed coaches that he has other attributes.

"I wanted to show that I can be a leader," Wallace said. "I know the coaches tell us what to do, but I wanted to be an extra person to hype the guys up and get them in line and get them situated. That's what coaches look at for quarterbacks, the leadership. I just really wanted to implement that."

Wallace was one of many visitors for last month's Junior Day. Special teams coordinator Jay Boulware has been his lead recruiter.

"He's real laid back. He's a funny guy," Wallace said. "I really like him. All the coaches up there are like father figures. I have a father and I have a mother and we all live together, but the coaches are like an extra person that I can lean against. I really like them."

Wallace said he is planning on attending A-Day this week and will be back in Auburn on Wednesday.
