Perry eying summer decision
Calvin Perry. But it also makes for an enjoyable time for the dual-position player.Spring practice has arrived for Bessemer (Ala.) Academy and that makes for a busy time for junior
"We've been going for a week strong now," said the 6-foot-2 and 210-pound Perry, who goes by C.J. "It was slow for the first couple of days because we have some young guys. But they have picked it up now and it's going good now.
"I am still working at linebacker and receiver like last year. It doesn't make it that busy because I've been doing it for two years now and I am used to it now. But I am doing even more this year because we are down on some numbers at some positions. So I will be playing some running back and more at the inside receiver position."
In 2010, Perry collected 51 catches for 719 yards and nine touchdowns and defensively, he collected 79 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions. He noted he believes his best position at the next level, however, is on the defensive side of the ball.
"Most people are recruiting me as an inside linebacker," said Perry. "Except Arkansas State is recruiting me as an athlete to play either linebacker or receiver. It really doesn't matter to me but if I had a choice, I want to play defense. I think defense suits me better because of my physical play and my ability to play in space."
Thus far in his recruitment, Perry has collected several offers and added to that total over the weekend. He noted several other schools have also stopped by this spring.
"I got an offer from Cincinnati over the weekend and I also have offers from Vanderbilt, Southern Miss, Arkansas State and South Alabama," said Perry. "I believe Mississippi State and Middle Tennessee State are getting very close to offering me and they are sticking in there.
"So far, South Alabama, Cincinnati, Southern Illinois, Mississippi State and Wake Forest have come by. And a lot more are coming by next week like Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State."
Perry attended one of MSU's junior day events earlier this year and noted he plans to return to MSU for summer camp akong with other stops.
"I am going to camps at Mississippi State, Southern Miss and then Middle Tennessee State and Vanderbilt," said Perry. "Our team is going to the 7-on-7 camp at Mississippi State and then I am going back there for the Big Dawg camp in July.
"Coach Geoff Collins at Mississippi State has been talking to me a lot and tells me what I need to keep working on. He said they were getting real close to offering me. He just sent me a hand-written letter so I feel good about that and I just have to wait to see what all happens."
Once the camp circuit concludes, Perry said he is leaning towards picking his college by the time he begins his senior year at Bessemer Academy.
"Everybody is kinda the same right now," said Perry. "But what I am going to do is wait and see who all offers me. I will keep those schools in mind and visit all of those that offer me. Then I am going to sit down with my dad, my mom and my sister and pick out the top 2 schools. I will visit those schools again and try to make my decision before my senior year starts. I want to go ahead and get my decision out of the way."
