Burbridge 'always liked Michigan State'

Farmington Hills Harrison wide receiver Aaron Burbridge announced his commitment to Michigan State via a post on Facebook early Thursday afternoon.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Farmington Hills Harrison star made his decision after returning home from an unofficial visit to Michigan State on Wednesday.

Ranked the No. 134 overall player in this class by Rivals.com, Burbridge is considered by some to be the top recruit in Michigan in 2012.

Burbridge committed to Michigan State over offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame.

Burbridge is ranked the No. 19 overall receiver in the Class of 2012.

Two of Burbridge's teammates, Devin Funchess and Mario Ojemudia, committed to Michigan earlier this year. But Burbridge kicked off a happy day for MSU football with phone calls to coaches in East Lansing and suburban Detroit.

"Aaron called me this morning and said that he has committed to Michigan State," said Farmington Hills Harrison head coach John Herrington. "I'm very happy for him. He went up there and he has always liked Michigan State, and he liked Michigan too, but he decided Michigan State.

"He always liked Michigan State, and I think Mark Dell being there probably had something to do with it too. Same type of ball player."

Dell, also from Farmington Hills Harrison, finished his senior season at Michigan State in 2010, leading the Spartans in receptions and earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. Dell signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent earlier this week.

"It's a big day for us," Herrington said. "Aaron committed to MSU, and Drew Stanton signed with the Lions, so we're all pretty pleased today."

Burbridge has to improve his GPA and his ACT score into order to qualify. Having made a college decision early, he has more than 12 months to make it happen.

"I think he can do it," Herrington said. "He has one of our former players mentoring him, and I think he will be good and focused. Michigan State's coaches said they have had players with a similar hill to climb, academically, and they were able to rally and do it. Aaron just had two A's during summer school, so that's a good start.
