Wilson excited to be a captain

MADISON - Russell Wilson has only been around Madison for the better part of two months. But within that time, the senior quarterback has done enough both on and off the field to earn enough trust in his teammates for them to vote him captain.

Wilson, along with Bradie Ewing, Aaron Henry and Patrick Butrym were all named captains, as voted upon by their teammates. BadgerBlitz.com was in on the fun when several members of the media interviewed the newest addition to the Badger program.

What were your thoughts when you found out you were a captain?

Wilson: I was definitely excited about it. It's a great opportunity, but at the same time we have a lot of great leaders on this team with is a positive thing for our football team. We just got to keep working and I'm going to do the best I can to make sure that every single day I put my best effort forward.

Were you surprised? It's not like you've been on this campus for a long time.

Wilson: I mean, yeah, I'm blessed more than anything. I'm just excited to be a part of this and I'm excited to be a part of this in general, whether I was a captain or not. I'm still going to lead even if I'm not a captain, but I'm excited to be a part of that. It's something special and the Lord has given me a great opportunity to be here, be a captain here and be a part of something great.

A little more than two months ago your teammates didn't even know you. What does it say to you that they would vote for you now after such a short time?

Wilson: I think it's a great thing. I think that we've really gotten to know each other, the whole team. I've really gotten to know the defensive players, the offensive players and some of the special team guys. And they've really gotten to know me. I think that's a positive thing. I'm excited about the season, I'm excited about the first game against a good team in UNLV. I'm really looking forward to it.

Is being captain something you had established as a goal?

Wilson: Well my goal was always to be a leader on the team. Whether it's a title or not I want to be a leader on the team on and off the field. I want to make sure that I'm putting all my work in, in terms of extra work in the film room and extra work on the football field. Whatever it takes to be the best. That's all I really care about.

So if the title is not going to change how do you approach things?

Wilson: No, definitely not. The title doesn't change anything. I'm still going to work my hardest every single day and make sure that I'm working my hardest and that everybody else is, too, so that we're achieving our goals.

What do you think of some of these other leaders on this team? Did anybody catch your eye in that regard?

Wilson: To be honest with you there are so many that it would be a long list. That's a great thing to have on this football team and that's what makes this team so special, to be honest with you. There are so many guys from seniors to juniors and even all the way down to some of the freshmen. That's a great thing.

What is your leadership style? How would you describe it?

Wilson: I'd say proactive, I guess. I don't know. Every single day I'm pretty serious on the football field and stuff, but I try to have fun, too. Just enjoy the game. It's a blessing. I know it's a blessing for me to be out here and the rest of the guys do too. It's a great thing.
