Interesting stats: One Moore win needed

Each week during the college football season, we look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing. Here is this week's version:

How about this statistical oddity? Each of the top 11 rushers in the nation in per-game average is from a different league, which means all the conferences are represented. The order: Mountain West, Big East, Sun Belt, ACC, Pac-12, SEC, WAC, Big 12, Big Ten, MAC and Conference USA.

As a comparison, four of the top seven passers in yards per game are from the Big 12.

Boise State QB Kellen Moore is 45-2 as a starter and needs one more win to surpass Texas' Colt McCoy as the NCAA's all-time winningest quarterback. Boise is off this week and plays at woebegone UNLV on Nov. 5.

Our weekly update on Houston QB Case Keenum: With 130 TD passes, Keenum is four shy of tying the NCAA career record owned by former Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell. He could get the record Thursday night against Rice, which is 96th in the nation in pass defense and has allowed 14 TD passes. (Interestingly, Moore has 123 TD passes and also could pass Harrell.) Keenum also has 1,312 completions and 16,271 passing yards, putting him well within reach of the NCAA career records of 1,403 (Harrell) and 17,072 (Hawaii's Timmy Chang), respectively.

More on Keenum: He became the NCAA's career record-holder in total offense last week against Marshall. He has 17,173 yards; the old record-holder was Chang, who picked up 16,910 yards from 2000-04.

There are 20 teams whose quarterbacks have thrown double-digit interceptions, and four are from the SEC: Auburn, Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Interceptions in and of themselves aren't necessarily a big deal, but Auburn, UK and Vandy are among the nation's bottom 14 in passing offense; they have a combined 24 TD passes and 32 interceptions. Central Michigan has thrown the most picks, with 14. LSU and Utah State have thrown just one apiece.

Oklahoma senior WR Ryan Broyles remains in striking distance of the NCAA's career mark for receiving yards (he already is the receptions leader). Former Nevada WR Trevor Insley has the record with 5,005. Broyles has 4,328.

So, is it better to be prolific on offense or stout on defense? The top five teams in scoring offense are a combined 33-2, while the top five teams in scoring defense are a combined 35-4.
