Bears up by 27 on Austin Peay

BERKELEY -- The California men's basketball team didn't have a signature 21-0 run like it did on Sunday against George Washington, but sophomore Richard Solomon's dunk as the buzzer sounded would just have to do, asthe Bears kept the pedal to the metal throughout the first half to go into the locker room with a 40-13 lead over an overmatched Austin Peay squad.

With no effective low-post defense, the Governors had a tough time defending Solomon. The 6-foot-10 sophomore from Los Angeles has been hot and cold through the first 20 minutes, but has registered six points on 2-of-2 shooting and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, while pulling down four rebounds.

Six different Bears have gotten onto the scoresheet, led by senior guard Jorge Gutierrez, who has a game-high 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

As the clock wound down in the first half, Gutierrez drove the lane against a trio of Austin Peay defenders, going up and then dishing left to a slashing Solomon, who hammered home the dunk and brought the Haas Pavilion crowd to its feet.

Right behind Gutierrez is freshman phenom David Kravish. In 11 minutes of action in just his third collegiate game, Kravish has a career-high eight points on 4-of-4 shooting -- mostly from the mid-post -- and has a block and a rebound to his name.

Sophomore wing Allen Crabbe, while scoring just five points in 17 minutes, has effectively neutralized the Governors' zone defense, and has come up with three rebounds and a steal.

Senior post Harper Kamp has had a solid night so far, scoring seven points in his 14 minutes on the floor and tying Gutierrez for a game-high five rebounds.

Sophomore Justin Cobbs entered the game with Kravish just under five minutes into the game, and had an immediate impact, driving the lane and drawing the attention of the Austin Peay defense while dishing out four assists in nine minutes of action.

Cobbs left the game with five minutes left in the half, coming up lame on his left leg.
