Maynard's MRI comes back negative, future uncertain

BERKELEY -- California head coach Jeff Tedford announced on Sunday that senior starting quarterback Zach Maynard's MRI on his injured left knee has come back "clean," showing no ligament damage. Tedford called the injury a "sprained knee," but said that it was unlikely he would play this week.

"The MRI was negative, which is good news, so now it's just a matter of day-to-day, seeing how it responds," Tedford said.

It is doubtful that Maynard will play on Saturday, much less start, but Tedford did not entirely rule it out. He did say, though, that the staff is going into this week anticipating that redshirt junior Allan Bridgford will start.

"Initially, yeah. It's day-to-day," Tedford said. "Depending on what Zach looks like on Tuesday, with no ligament damage, it could just be a muscle or something like that, but Bridgford will definitely be ready to play."

Stay tuned for more from Tedford and Bridgford.
