Cal PG injures shoulder in exhibition

BERKELEY -- Senior California point guard Brandon Smith was having a stellar exhibition for the Bears on Tuesday night, starting at the one and going 3-for-4 from the floor in the first half with two three-pointers and four-of-five free-throws sunk, but, with 10:32 left in the tune-up against San Francisco State -- which Cal won, 89-80 -- Smith spun into a screen and injured his left shoulder.

Smith was taken off the court, where the shoulder was heavily wrapped and iced before he returned to the sidelines about 10 minutes after the fact.

Smith finished the game with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting with two assists in 24 minutes.

"Brandon hurt his shoulder, but we don't know how long he's going to be out," said head coach Mike Montgomery. "Brandon actually played very well when he was in there. It was Tyrone [Wallace]'s first game, so he's got to get through the nervousness. Justin [Cobbs] played well. It's a work in progress. It's going to be a struggle. It's not going to be easy."

The Bears will also be without guard Ricky Kreklow for at least the first two weeks of the regular season, so Cal will have to play big, which was not a comforting thought to Montgomery, who's team gave up 17 offensive rebounds. Stay tuned for more from the exhibition.
