It took an extra period and a nail-biting finish, but Virginia Tech kept its bowl game hopes alive.

With the game tied at 23 in overtime, junior quarterback Logan Thomas found senior tight end Randall Dunn in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown pass. The Hokies then stopped Boston College on its ensuing possession to hold on for a 30-23 win.

It was an ugly start for Virginia Tech, which fell behind 13-3 at halftime. Eagles junior wide receiver Alex Amidon hauled in a two-yard touchdown pass int he second quarter, while Boston College added a pair of field goals by junior Nate Freese.

All the Hokies could muster was a 26-yard field goal by junior Cody Journell in the first quarter.

But Virginia Tech came back in the second half, beginning with a touchdown lunge up the middle by Thomas on fourth and inches inside the one yard-line, with 11:35 left in the third quarter.

The Hokies took the lead on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to senior wide receiver Marcus Davis, who outfought a Boston College defender for the ball. Davis also fought back after not getting the start at wide receiver for the first time all season.

Both teams traded field goals before the Eagles retook the lead with 4:11 left to play. Freshman David Dudeck rushed right up the middle for 12 yards and a 23-20 lead.

But Journell came up big again with 1:05 left, with a 41-yard field goal to tie the game.

Boston College deferred after winning the overtime coin toss, leading to Dunn's touchdown. Dudeck was stopped short of the first down on fourth and seven by senior WHIP Alonzo Tweedy to end the game.

The Hokies were able to move the ball consistently, rolling up 401 yards to Boston College's 291 yards.

Virginia Tech (5-6, 3-4 ACC) is still alive for the chance to go to a bowl game, but must defeat rival Virginia at home Nov. 24.
