Breaking down All-SEC football players

If one is looking for your typical 2012 All-Southeastern Conference football player, look no further than LSU linebacker Kevin Minter.

Minter is a fourth-year junior, who came from a high school in Georgia where he was a four-star recruit. Of the 62 players who earned first or second-team honors on teams selected by the Associated Press and the SEC coaches, two other players fit that profile - Georgia's Jarvis Jones and Chris Burnette.

There were 30 juniors chosen to one of the two All-SEC teams. In addition, 28 of the 62 all-league representatives signed in 2009. Moreover, 28 of the 62 honorees were four-star recruits. The state of Georgia led the way with ten of its players earning All-SEC honors.

Obviously, experience is an important characteristic. Only eight players were not a junior or senior. The only freshmen are Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Georgia running back Todd Gurley and Ole Miss linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche. Of the three, Gurley was the only true freshman.

Seven were five-star recruits - safety Craig Loston (LSU), offensive tackle D.J. Fluker and cornerback Dee Milliner (Alabama), defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and safety Matt Elam (Florida), defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (Missouri).

There were only three junior college players on the all-SEC teams - wide receiver Cordarelle Patterson (Tennessee) and nose tackles John Jenkins (Georgia) and Jesse Williams (Alabama). Of the three, only Patterson was a first-year player.

Five states produced almost two-thirds of the 62 honorees - Georgia (ten), Alabama (eight), Texas (eight), Florida (seven) and Louisiana (seven). Only two schools had five home-state honorees - Alabama and Texas A&M.

Three of Louisiana's seven all-SEC individuals play for schools outside of the state - Vanderbilt defensive back Andre Hal (Port Allen), Alabama running back Eddie Lacy (Dutchtown) and Tennessee offensive lineman Dallas Thomas (Scotlandville).
