Webb commits to TU

Tulsa (Okla.) Metro Christian lineman Zach Webb has been on the University of Tulsa radar for a long time, and when the Golden Hurricane stepped up with an offer, he didn't think twice.

Webb (6-foot-2, 280 pounds) was on an official visit to Missouri State this weekend, but he decided to give Tulsa Head Coach Bill Blankenship a call on Saturday night, and he was given good news.

"Last night, I talked to Coach Blankenship, and he extended me an offer," Webb told InsideTulsaSports.com on Sunday afternoon. "I'm pumped. I told him I'm committing, you can already count me in. I'm hooked up and ready to go.

"He told me he still wants me to come into the football offices with my mom and dad, so he can make it more official and we can sit down and talk. He wants me to come for an official visit this weekend. I've been there enough, I've seen the facilities and met all the coaches, but he just wants me to get the experience."

At first, Webb didn't think he'd be able to make a visit next weekend due to a school ski trip, but he worked that out and will be on the TU campus on January 25.

"I'm going on a ski trip with my school this next weekend, but I got permission from my school to fly up Sunday," he said. "I really want to be at TU this weekend and join the family."

Webb had early interest from New Mexico, New Mexico State, Penn State, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Iowa State, Air Force and several others. He began to rack up FCS offers and took official visits to South Dakota State and Missouri State.

New Mexico State offered Webb a grayshirt opportunity, and then he finally received the scholarship offer from Tulsa.

"I've been waiting for a while for this," he said of the offer from TU. "I've just been kind of waiting for them to give me a shot, letting myself prove to them that I'm worthy of the opportunity. I just wanted to go out there and prove some people wrong."

As a senior at Metro Christian, Webb compiled 83 tackles, 23 tackles-for-loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries on defense, earning him all-state and all-metro honors. He posted 92 tackles and 11 sacks as a junior.

"My strengths are my pass rush, my vision on the field, the way I run the box and my ability to read block," he said in October. "Everyone can always improve. I guess if I had to choose an area I'd like to improve, it would be getting rid of blockers and shedding blocks. I'm getting double and tripled teamed this season, so I'm having to get used to that."

Back in October, Webb explained what he liked about the Tulsa program.

"I love the TU football program as a whole and the coaches are some of the best in the country," he said. "They make you feel welcome and important and are strong Christian men that I admire.

"The campus is awesome. Most of the people on campus are friendly, and it seems like a family environment. The football facilities are up there, if not better, than any I have visited. TU is ranked as one of the top schools in the nation academically and offer Sports Science, which I want to study."

Tulsa currently has 18 commitments in the 2013 class, including nine from Oklahoma.
