Overexposure @ iS8/Nike Friday

SOUTH JAMAICA, NY - The iS8/Nike is all about exposure - For some, it's about getting exposure. For others, it's about being exposed.

On Friday, it was some of both as the Brooklyn Badgers faced Determined Student Athletes followed by New Heights (Sophs) versus Sid Jones United Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Badgers (A) Survive Determined Student Athletes, 47-39

The Badgers were fortified with D-1 talent but casually walked into some Determined Student Athletes, coached by Lloyd Clarida. Paced by Queen City Prep (NC) guard Naiel Smith (12 points), the Badgers still managed to jump out in front 13-4 with 4 minutes left in the first quarter but DSA responded with a 6-0 run in the second quarter capped off by a trey from Jamie Lee Mejia (6 points).

With the Badgers lead sliced down to a point, a now motivated and Determined Student Athlets took their first lead at 22-20 when Miles Burkes (6 points) scored on a drive. Khadeen Carrington (12 points) would get a steal to tie the game but both teams would go into the locker room knotted a 22; a moral victory for a the over-matched DSA.

The Determined Student Athletes lived up to their name as Burkes drained a jumper at the top of the third quarter but Carrington began to heat up and drained a 3-ball pushing the Brooklyn Badgers back out in front. DSA pushed back but strong inside moves by Towson-bound Shamiek Sheppard (10 points) put the Brooklyn squad in front 37-32 to end the quarter.

At the top of the final quarter, DSA kept it close as Mejia tied the game once again at 39 but Smith would net a 3-ball with 2:10 left in regulation to put the Badgers out in front for good. UConn commit Terrence Samuel (6 points) would take a charge causing a DSA turnover and Smith would get a steal that led to an emphatic dunk by Sheppard. The Brooklyn Badgers would snap out of it to survive what would have been a colossal upset.

New Heights trumped by a United Brooklyn in OT, 57-55

The game would be neck and neck throughout the first quarter and both team scored. Sid Johnson United held a slim 10-8 lead over New Heights (Sophomores) heading into the second quarter due to production from Sky Seay (10 points) and Sam Joseph (7 points) but things would change in the second quarter.

Buckets by Jordan Lincoln (15 points) and Cardinal Hayes big man A.K. Ojo (4 points) plus improved defense would put New Height out in from 24-19 to begin the third quarter.

New Heights would eventually double their lead midway through the third quarter as Sayon Charles (12 points) stepped up his game but UB wasn't finished competing. After missing the mark repeatedly from the perimeter, Jaquan Lynch (15points) would get hot in the second half. He along with Bishop Loughlin's 6'8" rising senior big man A.J. Vernon (7 points) would spearhead a 13-4 run that reduced Sid Johnson United Brooklyn's deficit to a point.

Late arrival Jermoine Faison (9 points) from Thomas Jefferson Campus would also heat up late in the second half, sending the game into overtime tied at 53 and ultimately leading United Brooklyn to pull off the win.

The pure hustle and crunch time heroics by Faison further impressed Western Oklahoma JUCO coach Kevin Simmons who said he was in town with the intention of signing the senior next week.

  • In other exposure; Sunday (4/7) game between NYC Finest and 2GZ Entertainment at the Bed Stuy Dome, the win was reversed and awarded to NYC Finest when 2 GZ Entertainment was found to have violated the iS8 age requirement rule.
