Carey earns preseason All-American nod
After wrapping up the 2012 season as a consensus All-American, Arizona running back Ka'Deem Carey is now a 2013 preseason pick.
Well-respected college football writer Phil Steele announced his preseason picks Wednesday and Carey, last season's leading rusher in the nation, was named to the second team.
Picked ahead of Carey for first-team honors were Alabama's T.J. Yeldon and Oregon's De'Anthony Thomas - the latter arguably the most dangerous man in college football, but also one who is not a true feature back or one-trick pony. But, then again, where exactly would you list Thomas?
It is the second time this offseason Carey was named to one of Steele's preseason lists, landing on the first team of the All-Pac-12 Conference honorees.
The Pac-12 was well-represented on the All-American teams with 20 players earning nods, including seven first-teamers between the offense and defense.
Carey obliterated the Arizona record books as a sophomore last season, collecting 1,929 rushing yards, 23 rushing touchdowns and 2,248 all-purpose yards. Only the latter fell short - one yard, to be exact - of a new school best. In all, Carey picked up eight All-American honors last season, including the prestigious nod from the Walter Camp team.
However, it has been a long offseason filled with less than desirable off-the-field news for Carey, who will attempt to restore his image after a domestic violence incident with an ex-girlfriend in December.
Carey was off limits to reporters throughout spring camp and his on-field action, particularly in scrimmages, was limited. Although, part of the reason was to limit the mileage on his legs and avoid injury.
Now, the headlines are starting to look positive again for Carey, who will likely be among the list of early names in the Heisman race in 2013.
