Tuesday scrimmage report

At first glance, one may think that the offense had its way in LSU's third scrimmage of preseason practice Tuesday afternoon.

LSU coach Les Miles said that the offense passed for 250 yards and ran for 200 yards for the second straight scrimmage. However, Miles also indicated that there were 120 plays in the scrimmage, which was held indoors due to the rain. So, the defense allowed fewer than four yards per snap.

"Our defense looked pretty good in the scrimmage today," said Miles at his post-scrimmage press conference. "I wouldn't say I am surprised at how the defense has looked. The defense just has guys like Jordan Allen, who is 6-5 and 260 pounds. He has great speed. Jordan is coming of age.

"Those guys are better after being another year in the program. We have newcomers in many ways on that defense line. But, I am looking forward to seeing them play."

Miles praised each area of the defense. He said that D.J. Welter has probably wrapped up the starting job at middle linebacker. End Jermauria Rasco took part in the scrimmage, but Allen and Danielle Hunter were the ends who caught Miles' attention.

"The defensive front continues to get better," Miles said. "Danielle Hunter is making plays out there. The linebacker corps is hard-hitting and fast to the ball. We are probably as athletic as we have been at linebacker. The safeties, the entire secondary is fast to the ball."

Miles used the word "sloppy" to describe the offense for the third straight scrimmage. Being more specific, Miles indicated that there are too many pre-snap penalties and holding calls. The scrimmage had the No. 1 units going against the No. 2 units. The second string was using play cards.

According to Miles, Alfred Blue was the leading rusher and scored two touchdowns. Travin Dural, Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry and Dillon Gordon caught touchdown passes. Anthony Jennings threw one of the scoring passes with Mettenberger accounting for the other three.

Miles also said that Colby Delahoussaye has won the place-kicking job although both Trent Domingue and James Hairston could be used on long field goal attempts.

"We got a lot accomplished in the scrimmage today," Miles said. "Overall, it was a positive scrimmage. Obviously, we are a very talented team. But, there are things we need to correct and can correct. That's the plan."

LSU will have a walk-through Wednesday before returning to the practice field Thursday. At that time, the Tigers will begin preparations for the TCU game.
