Cal running back commit Tre Watson finishes off historic season
He won't be playing for a state title on Saturday, but Tre Watson also won't soon be forgotten.
In a 70-49 CIF State Open Division Semifinal loss to St. John Bosco Saturday night, the Cal committed running back set a new Riverside County record with 3,762 rushing yards on the season, and also tied the school record with 50 TDs.
Recording his 8th 200+ yard rushing performance of the season and 13th multi-TD game, Watson used 46 carries to rush for 264 yards and two scores against a St John Bosco defense with FIVE FBS commits on defense -- Jaleel Wadood, Chandler Leniu, Malik Dorton, Naijiel Hale, Chandler Hawkins -- and a sixth (Jacob Tuioti-Mariner) who has offers from the likes of UCLA, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Boise State. Those seven have a combined 21 stars.
Watson had just two fumbles on the season on more than 400 carries. He averaged more than nine yards per carry, buoyed by a school-record 466-yard, seven-touchdown performance against St. Bonaventure in Week 2. On the season, the 5'11", 195-pounder had seven games with four or more TDs for the 23rd ranked team in the country and helped the Huskies lay hold to the top rushing mark in the entire state.
Just one of Watson's offensive linemen is FBS bound this year: 4-star USC commit Viane Talamaivao, Rivals' fourth-ranked 2014 offensive guard.
Watson's attention will now turn to recruiting, and January official visits to Cal and UCLA. Watson has already tripped to Boise State and Utah, and says his fifth and final visit is still TBD. St. John Bosco, meanwhile, advances to the CIF State Open Division championship against Concord De La Salle next Saturday.
