Rivers to transfer
The logjam at LSU's quarterback position lessened Wednesday when Stephen Rivers announced that he will transfer from the school at the end of the spring semester.
Rivers, who would have been a redshirt junior in the fall, will graduate in May. Therefore, he will be immediately eligible at any school. Rivers has two years of eligibility remaining.
"I graduate in May, so this will be an opportunity for me to play somewhere else and get on the field," said Rivers at halftime of the LSU-Mississippi State basketball game. "It has been a great three years here although I have not been on the field as much as I wanted."
Rivers redshirted in 2011 before serving as Zach Mettenberger's backup one season later. This past campaign, Rivers dropped to third on the depth chart behind Mettenberger and true freshman Anthony Jennings.
"I enjoyed my time here," Rivers said. "There is nothing bad I can say about LSU. The coaches have been great. There is no bad blood. I have not played since high school except for a few plays. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do."
Rivers will continue to work out in the LSU weight room, but not with the team. He has no school in mind at this point for his destination.
"I am just looking to get on the field," Rivers said. "I haven't narrowed it down at all. I will talk with my brother (San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers) and other people."
The Tigers will have four scholarship quarterbacks at spring practice - Jennings, freshman Brandon Harris, redshirt freshman Hayden Rettig and senior Rob Bolden.
